So much has happened since October that I hardly know where to begin.

I guess for me the most significant change was on Valentine's Day when Heather accepted my marriage proposal. We won't be getting married until next year, but that 1 change really changes everything else in my life.

I've decided that in order to be able to afford the wedding, I'll need to get either a second job or a new one as soon as I can. I'm currently taking a class, but as soon as that's over I need to get busy and hunt for something.
In order to have the time to have a second job I've let Lighting the Way Ministries know that they'll have to find someone else to run the table ministry. I can sponsor someone at UT if they can find someone to actually do it, but I just don't have the time anymore.

Heather and I both got our orange belts in Isshin-ryu karate last week. I don't feel like I'm ready for it, but Master Mills does, so I guess that's what matters.

Quick Update

Well I've been a little busy lately so I thought I'd update the 1 or 2 people that actually read this. I recently put together a website for my karate instructor Pete Mills. He's a great guy and a wonderful instructor. If you're in the Knoxville area be sure and check out his class.

Also I'm dating a wonderful lady named Heather. She's a day care worker and she sure has the patience for it. If she can put up with me then kids should be easy.

Anyhow, I'm hoping to set up the table ministry at UT again on Friday, weather permitting. Unfortunately I don't have anyone to help with the table so it should be interesting getting everything from the parking garage to the location.

Lighting The Way : Update

Well, I've managed to set up the table ministry a couple of times and have had the opportunity to speak with some wonderful young people at the UT campus. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art.

When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The fatherwas notified and grieved deeply for his only son.

About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands.

He said, 'Sir, you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art.' The young man held out this package. 'I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.'

The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture.. 'Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me.. It's a gift.' The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.

The man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. 'We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture?'

There was silence..

Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, 'We want to see the famous paintings.. Skip this one.'

But the auctioneer persisted. 'Will somebody bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?'

Another voice angrily. 'We didn't come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Gogh's, the Rembrandts. Get on with the Real bids!'

But still the auctioneer continued. 'The son! The son! Who'll take the son?' Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room.. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. 'I'll give $10 for the painting...' Being a poor man, it was all he could afford.

We have $10, who will bid $20?'

'Give it to him for $10. Let's see the masters.' The crowd was becoming angry. They didn't want the picture of the son.

They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections. The auctioneer pounded the gavel. 'Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!'

A man sitting on the second row shouted, 'Now let's get on with the collection!'

The auctioneer laid down his gavel. 'I'm sorry, the auction is over.'

'What about the paintings?'

'I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time.. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings.

The man who took the son gets everything!'

God gave His son 2,000 years ago to die on the cross. Much like the auctioneer, His message today is: 'The son, the son, who'll take the son?'

Because, you see, whoever takes the Son gets everything. FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, WHO SO EVER BELIEVETH, SHALL HAVE ETERNAL LIFE...THAT'S LOVE

Thanks To A Blind Man, I Can See A Little More Clearly

When I went to the laundry room today, I did what I normally do. I put my laundry in my truck and drove over to the building where the laundry room is and parked at the end of the sidewalk and took my stuff in to wash it. Then I left and ran a few errands and went back to put my stuff in the dryer. When it was time to pull the stuff out, I once again drove over there and parked right on the end of the sidewalk so it wouldn’t be far to carry it. Since I only get the chance to do laundry every couple of weeks there’s quite a bit and it’s pretty heavy.

At the end of the sidewalk where it meets the street are the diagonal painted lines indicating not to park there. I’ve always ignored it since there’s no ramp and that entrance isn’t wheelchair accessible. Let me first say I’ve learned my lesson and will never park there again.

As I was folding my clothes a blind man came in and it was obvious he was upset. As soon as he heard me he justifiably let me have it. Thanks to my truck he had a lot of trouble finding the sidewalk. Honestly, considering how upset he was I was surprised he kept his calm so well. I’m not sure I’d have been so nice. Anyhow, after he finished loading his clothes in the washer (and calmed down some) he explained the situation to me and asked me not to park there anymore.

I’ve not been so embarrassed at my inconsideration in a really long time and the more I think about it, the more I realize that there’s probably been dozens of times I should’ve been equally embarrassed but those around me were too kind to say anything. If you’re one of those people, I apologize.

If I Were The Devil - by Paul Harvey

<div style="text-align: center; The pastor indicated that as Christians we shouldn't complain about our leaders, instead we should support our government leaders and pray for them. While I do agree we should support them as best we can and definitely we should pray for them, at what point do we quit supporting them? America was founded as a Christian nation, but there's no denying the Declaration of Independence was an act of treason against the English crown.

Thinking about this has led me to some conclusions about the true responsibility of a Christian. While we are citizens of the nation in which we live, our real citizenship isn't America or Germany or South Africa or China, it's Heaven.

While we can and must maintain participation in the community of humanity in order to provide witness to everyone for Christ, we needn't concern ourselves so much with the laws of the land that get passed (homosexual marriage for instance), though we should continue to effect the process so government coincides with biblical teaching when possible. Rather, we should concern ourselves more with winning our lawmakers and judges to Christ and electing Christian lawmakers/judges and they'll be in the position to pass and maintain godly laws for us all.

Yes, homosexuality is certainly is a sin and shouldn't be condoned, but you cant legislate morality. Jesus said anger is tantamount to murder - should we make anger illegal? The argument that homosexuality is a "worse" sin than anger, or lust, or sticking your tongue out at your mother (disrespecting one's parents) doesn't wash in God's eyes and it shouldn't wash in ours either. Sin is sin, period.

By the same token there should be laws passed expressly giving ministers the right to deny marrying anyone he or she so chooses, for any reason he or she chooses. This is necessary not to keep the homosexual from getting married so much as protect the minister's legal ability to not condone the unbiblical act of a homosexual union. If the minister marries them he is, in effect saying "I believe this to be good in the sight of God." This puts the pastor in the untenable position of going to jail for not marrying them or giving up his ministry. Any other option would be going against the God he vowed to serve. The law hasn't gone down this path quite yet in the U.S., but it has in Canada and several other countries; it's only a matter of time.

The thing I have a problem with regarding homosexuality is the attitude within that community that regards the public school system as a legitimate indoctrination camp whereby they can force their moral agenda onto the children of America and stifle any opposing viewpoint by screaming "separation of church and state!" which isn't even a law much less part of the Constitution like they love to claim.

Oklahoma Rebellion

Check out this article!

Lions and tigers and dinosaurs, oh my!

Dinosaurs only lived "millions and millions of years ago", ehh? Parents could examine the curriculum and take part in an actual lesson presented exactly as it would be given to the students.

When I arrived at the school, I was surprised to discover only about a dozen parents there. As we waited for the presentation, I thumbed through page after page of instructions in the prevention of pregnancy or disease. I found abstinence mentioned only in passing.

When the teacher arrived with the school nurse, she asked if there were any questions. I asked why abstinence did not play a noticeable part in the material. What happened next was shocking.

There was a great deal of laughter, and someone suggested that if I thought abstinence had any merit, I should go back to burying my head in the sand. The teacher and the nurse said nothing as I drowned in a sea of embarrassment. My mind had gone blank, and I could think of nothing to say. The teacher explained to me that the job of the school was to teach "facts" and the home was responsible for moral training. I sat in silence for the next 20 minutes as the course was explained. The other parents seemed to give their unqualified support to the materials.

"Donuts at the back," announced the teacher during the break. "I'd like you to put on the name tags we have prepared. They're right by the donuts and mingle with the other parents." Everyone moved to the back of the room. As I watched them affixing their name tags and shaking hands, I sat deep in thought. I was ashamed that I had not been able to convince them to include a serious discussion of abstinence in the materials. I uttered a silent prayer for guidance.

My thoughts were interrupted by the teacher's hand on my shoulder. "Won't you join the others, Mr. Layton?" The nurse smiled sweetly at me. "The donuts are good!" "Thank you, no," I replied. "Well, then, how about a name tag? I'm sure the others would like to meet you." "Somehow I doubt that," I replied. "Won't you please join them?" she coaxed. Then I heard a still, small voice whisper, "Don't go." The instruction was unmistakable. "Don't go!" "I'll just wait here," I said.

When the class was called back to order, the teacher looked around the long table and thanked everyone for putting on name tags. She ignored me. Then she said, "Now we're going to give you the same lesson we'll be giving your children. Everyone please peel off your name tags." I watched in silence as the tags came off. "Now, then, on the back of one of the tags, I drew a tiny flower. Who has it, please?" The gentleman across from me held it up. "Here it is!" "All right," she said. "The flower represents disease. Do you recall with whom you shook hands?" He pointed to a couple of people. "Very good," she replied. "The handshake in this case is intimacy. So the two people you had contact with now have the disease."

There was laughter and joking among the parents. The teacher continued, "And with whom did the two of YOU shake hands?" The point was well taken, and she explained how this lesson would show students how quickly disease is spread. "Since we all shook hands, we all have the disease."

It was then that I heard the still, small voice again. "Speak now," it said, "but be humble." I noted wryly the latter admonition, then rose from my chair. I apologized for any upset I might have caused earlier, congratulated the teacher on an excellent lesson that would impress the youth, and concluded by saying I had only one small point I wished to make.

"Not all of us were infected," I said. "One of us ABSTAINED."

Toby Mac - Irene
by wanzea

I've Moved!

My move is done! I never thought I'd say it but I actually enjoy the exercise! Anyhow, I just thought I'd post an update before I moved.

Testimony Afshin - Muslim Journey to Hope

Thankfully it's for a good reason; I'm moving closer to work. The new place is bigger (thank goodness, I'm sick of the shoebox I've been in for the past 2 years). It also has 3x the closet space, which is also good. Plus I'll be close enough to ride my bike to work when its nice. I'll be moving in June so this summer's gonna be kinda busy.

On another front, I've started going to church again. I've been wanting to go for a while but mostly its big churches around here which I'm not used to. Anyhow I'm really enjoying the people in my class there, so I've decided to join. It's Sevier Heights Baptist Church.

As for school, the semester is almost over. I have a final art project to present tomorrow and one more test next week and I'll be done till fall. I'm also planning a weekend trip up to Dollywood a couple days before Easter. Dollywood is only about 80 miles away from here, so it's a nice, inexpensive (with a season pass anyhow) mini-vacation that I'm really looking forward to.
As to the diabetes, I've lost around 20 lbs so far so I'm doing pretty good. I wasn't really surprised as I've been letting my weight go every since I got out of the military in '96. What did surprise me was how nonchalant the doctor was about it. It was almost like he said "yep, its a hang nail". This sounds odd but I now actually have a reason to be thankful to have been with my ex-wife (she had type 1 diabetes which is much worse). Being with her taught me pretty much everything I needed to know as a new diabetic.
I'm still learning of course, its been 13 years since we were together and there's been some pretty great strides in the realm of diabetes in terms of both the blood meters and diets. Fortunately though what I already knew has allowed me to get my blood sugar under control quickly so now I can concentrate more on losing weight and hopefully coming off the pills at some point (I hope).

UK Facing National ID Card Woes

At first when I began reading this article about the National ID card and how it poses a loss of basic right to privacy I thought it was about how here in America we are facing the Real ID requirements to State driver's licenses. In fact in Middlesbrough, England they've even gone so far as equip these cameras with loudspeakers so the operators can fuss at passersby dropping litter or whatever. One project is going to be an outhouse (yes, with a moon on the door) and the other one an elephant.

The teacher wanted us to build a container to hold a non-physical thing (love, logic, whatever) so I decided disgust would be my theme. If you've ever been inside an old fashioned outhouse you'll understand why I picked that to be my container.

The elephant project is going to be about 3ft tall and made of peanuts...I've been busy making paper machete to fill it so it wouldn't require so many peanuts, but I'm still worried I wont be able to get peanuts in such a large quantity.Needless to say I have some calling around to do on that one.

I'll post more as I go along.
<img width='1' height='1' Well, almost over anyhow. Art 101 - finished. I managed to finish all the drawings I needed to...at 2am the night before, like a true freshman.I'll post a few of my drawings here once I get them back and can shoot them with my new digital camera. Only one English class to go and I'm done for the summer.

I went ahead and declared art as my major, and I'm planning on doing a Bachelor of Fine Arts - Media. What that basically means is a lot of photography and cinematography classes. I cant wait! I'm so impressed by so many photographers out there I cant even mention them. I hope I can learn enough to hold my own. If not I guess I can go to work at Olan Mills studios ha ha.

It feels funny being in school again at 40, but any chance to learn more should be grabbed onto with both hands. My job pays for 3 classes a semester and who am I to argue? To not take them up on it is like a pay cut. I generally only take 2; more than that tends to cut into my free time too much.

2- DM - Research

This guy's pretty funny, check him out!

A Friend In Need...

I just got word tonight that a good friend of mine had a heart attack earlier today. While I wasn't entirely surprised, it was in a way still a shock. He's had a lot of medical problems including high blood pressure and degenerative disc disease and some other problems, but he's only 30 years old and so it's still surprising on that level.

In case you don't know him, he's the author of Dysfunctional Playground. I first met him when we both worked for an Internet company down in Florida. When the company closed he moved back to his home state of GA and I returned to TN. We've kept in touch over the years through Dark Age of Camelot, an MMORPG that we both play.

Hopefully now that he's been admitted to the hospital they'll at last give him the treatment he's not been getting due to no insurance. In any case, pray for my friend that he'll get well. I know I will.

Artistic Woes

Well, I got a big shock today. My art teacher informed us that our class ends next Wednesday. He wants our sketchbooks totally full by then. I'm about 50% there, so that's about 80 or so drawings. On top of that he wants our final portfolio then and I'll need to draw 7 drawings for that and those will need to be high quality ones.

Sooo...I'm guessing I wont have time for much else for the next week. I'm glad I waited because I've had time to think about it now and maybe this wont come off as just ranting.

Yesterday while at work I ordered lunch from a local Chinese restaurant. I've ordered lunch and dinner from them for a couple of years now and they have good food and their delivery drivers are some of the most prompt in Knoxville. I've had absolutely nothing bad to say about them, until now....and its not entirely their fault.

Let me start from the beginning. I called, made my order, and decided to use my Visa debit card like I've done dozens of times before. I give my number, my expiration date....and then he asks me a question I've never had asked from a delivery place before. My billing address. I'm at work! Why do you need my billing address! Haven't you ever heard of invasion of privacy?

I confront him about this as nicely as I can muster, and he tries to tell me its to protect me in case someone steals my card. I reply that if my card is stolen its none of his business, I can have it canceled and if I don't its my problem, not his. He then complains they've been getting a lot of canceled cards and they're trying to protect themselves. This is understandably frustrating for any business owner, but its the cost of doing business. They can sue for their money or they can do the same thing Walmart does when they don't catch shoplifters....write it off on their taxes. The bottom line is its not my problem, don't try and take my right to privacy away.

The order taker then tries to explain they have a new credit card system and it requires it. He further explains that they don't even have a computer at the restaurant and they're an honest small business. Of course at this point I do feel kinda bad for the guy because I know this to be the truth. Credit companies have no souls; they need your name and address so they can sell them to marketing firms to send you useless junk mail.

Nevertheless, I don't let him totally off the hook. I tell him I believe him to be honest and don't think he'll steal my info, but I do reprimand his restaurant for choosing such an invasive company to do business with.

Do I feel sorry for him? A little, but maybe if enough people complain about all the intrusive behavior by these companies they'll start insisting the credit companies lay off. This continual invasion of privacy has got to stop! Between these intrusions by big business and the government we're quickly losing what made this country great.

So long as I'm not harming anyone else I should be able to live totally anonymously from Uncle Sam AND Uncle Sam Walton. Please, stand up for your rights, don't just roll over and let them be sold to the highest payed marketing agency!

Could a Speech From 1976 Predict What We Know As The News?

Man this is so true, a perfect description of television and especially what we call "news" today.

School -n- Stuff

Well, I finally finished and turned in The English Project.
